Minister of Education Harpa on CBT against Examination Malpractices

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, has insisted that Computer Based Test transition marks a turning point in Nigeria’s fight against examination malpractice. He noted that standardized, technology-driven testing will help eliminate leaks, cheating, and other irregularities that have plagued both NECO and WAEC exams.

Galaxy Television reports that the Minister while monitoring the pilot phase of the CBT SSCE at SASCON International School and Model junior and secondary school Maitama, Abuja Commended the National Examinations Council (NECO) for its successful transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

He further stated that by November 2025, all NECO and WAEC objective Examinations will be conducted using CBT, and by 2026, both objective and essay components will fully transition to CBT joining JAMB in delivering digital examinations. He revealed that existing JAMB CBT centers, which number in the thousands, will be utilized for future NECO and WAEC exams, eliminating the need for school-based testing.

The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, said the council is fully prepared to conduct exams using Computer-Based Testing (CBT), despite some infrastructural challenges. For the 2025 SSCE, Wushishi said 1,367,210 candidates registered, the highest in recent years with Kano State leading at over 137,000 candidates, and Kebbi State recording the lowest, just above 5,000. The smallest center is in Saudi Arabia with 8 candidates.
